Edith Stein

by Arthur Giron

One woman's search for truth in a world of evil

Directed by Brian Cannon

Edith Stein was a German philosopher, who was born a Jew, became a Catholic in 1922 and then a Carmelite nun in 1934. She was rounded up with other Jews under the Nazi holocaust and died at Auschwitz in 1942. 2008 marks the tenth anniversary of her canonisation.

The play traces Edith's journey from the university, to the convent and eventually to the gas chamber. Girón also dramatises the tensions between Christians and Jews that have developed around a woman that incarnates both identities.
